This is a respected grower-bottler in the town of Cuisles, in the hills above Châtillons-sur-Marne, on the northern side of the Marne River. This cuvee is named for a fallen hero of the French resistance, Eugène Moussé, who started domaine-bottling here in 1923. Regrettably he was captured by the Germans and perished in Neuengamme concentration camp in Hamburg in 1945. Monsieur Moussé, we salute you, and toast to you. Champagne expert Peter Liem descirbes this cuvee thus: "The brut sans année used to be called Cuvée Or Tradition ("Or" meaning gold, rather than a conjunction separating the other two words), but it’s recently been renamed L’Or d’Eugène in honor of its creator, who began making a blanc de noirs in this fashion in 1923. Its composed of 80 percent meunier and 20 percent pinot noir, sourced not only from Cuisles, but also from parcels in Jonquery, Châtillon-sur-Marne and Vandières, and it’s aged in a perpetual cuvée containing every vintage back to 2003. Despite being made exclusively from red grapes, it demonstrates an unusual finesse, complementing its bold fruit flavors."
