Garrison Brothers Bourbon, Cheese & Chocolate Pairing – Various Locations
February 9, 2018 - February 10, 2018
Proprietor and Distiller, Garrison Brothers Distillery
In 2001, Dan Garrison walked away from a financially rewarding but volatile career as a software marketing professional to go get Whiskey Bent.
A lifetime lover of straight bourbon, Garrison was reading a newspaper story about “yet another Texas vodka.” He wondered aloud to his wife why anyone would make that crap when they could make Bourbon. She replied, “As much of that stuff as you drink, maybe you should. We’d probably save money.” Two weeks later, he was in Kentucky.
Thus began an entrepreneurial labor of love. After numerous trips to Kentucky to learn the craft from the best in the world, Garrison set up shop on his family’s farm and borrowed money from his curious bourbon-drinking friends. He bought an antique pot still (once used by Elmer T. Lee and Jimmy Russell) and named her The Copper Cowgirl.
A few years later Garrison uncorked one of the test recipe bourbon barrels he’d been maturing. The bourbon had matured into a big, beautiful nectar unlike anything made in Kentucky. Garrison began to beg, borrow and steal to build a bigger distillery. The rest is history.
Since then, eleven vintages of Garrison Brothers Texas Bourbon Whiskey have been released and each release has sold out in a matter of months. Bottles of Garrison Brothers Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey have become sought-after collectors’ items. Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon was twice named the American Micro Whiskey Of The Year in Jim Murray’s Whiskey Bible with an astounding score of 96.5. Today, some bars in Texas and Las Vegas sell more Garrison Brothers than Jack Daniels (even at $12 to $20 a glass). The family farm distillery has become a bourbon Mecca attracting thousands of visitors a year.
The Distillery releases more bourbon every year but demand in Texas has been so strong that Garrison was unable to distribute his bourbon beyond his home state until 2013. Since then, the sought-after bourbon is now available in 25 states in America.
Garrison is the founder of the The Trail Foundation and the Hye Appreciation Society. He also is a founder of the Texas Distilled Spirits Association and currently serves on the board of directors of the American Crafts Spirits Association. Garrison Brothers Distillery is also a member of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) and Garrison serves on the small distillery advisory council and public affairs committee.
Garrison’s favorite leisure activities are running in the beautiful Texas Hill Country and drinking bourbon afterward. He has been married to a wonderful fifth generation Texas whiskey girl for 22years and together they are raising two smart, beautiful kids in Hye, Texas.
